21/01/2010
There was renewed optimism around the UK jobs market yesterday as new figures showed that unemployment fell for the first time since May 2008.
However, the headline figure masked a continued increase in the number of those described as economically inactive. This figure, dubbed the 'hidden jobless', rose to around eight million in the three months to November a record high.
The findings also indicated that more than one million people are taking up part time work because they are unable to find a full-time job.
All in all, despite some positive signs, it seems that there is still some way to go for those worried about their employment prospects and the debt problems'>debt problems that could follow a result.
