Energy Comparison News: Heating bills soar

Thousands of British households could be seeking debt help as freezing temperatures drastically hike the cost of keeping warm.

Research from Energyhelpline has found that families will pay £1.9 billion in extra heating charges if the current cold snap continues next week.

This would amount to an increase of £70 on the average January gas bill – 52 per cent higher than the same month last year.

The National Grid reported an all-time record demand for gas last week, and forecasters have warned that Britain may this month be experiencing its coldest weather in almost 30 years.

Kevin Still, director of EuroDebt, pointed to the six million calls made to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) last week, with many seeking help through cold weather payments.

He also warned that rising energy costs can create debt problems'>debt problems, advising people to get the most for their money by checking energy comparison sites such as www.energyswitching.co.uk.
