UK energy regulator Ofgem has warned that electricity bills could increase by as much as four pounds thirty a year over the next five years.

The increased charges will cover the cost of necessary improvements. But Ofgem said that it will be calling on providers to cut the financial burden they plan to place on customers.

The watchdog said that investment should not be used as a "shameful excuse to overcharge consumers".

However, the new settlement is a significant increase on the three pounds seventy six pre-inflation rise that was originally planned in August.

The increase in costs comes against a backdrop of rising unemployment – meaning that more and more people are likely to struggle in the current climate.
