Millions missing out on energy savings
11/11/2009
It's claimed that as many as 3.6 million people in the UK could be missing out on serious savings to their energy bills because they're not claiming insulation grants.
Research from Home Heat Helpline says families have the chance to save more than £250 each year by installing insulation.
Independent think tank the New Policy Institute (NPI), found that low income households claiming either out-of-work or disability benefits, working tax credit or pension credit, could also benefit from insulation grants.
A further 1.3 million people aren't taking advantage of the funds as anyone over 70 can also apply, simply because of their age.
The grants are provided under the Carbon Emission Reduction Target scheme, this provides cavity wall or loft insulation for poorly-insulated homes.
Kevin Still, Director of Debt management company EuroDebt says "We are committed to looking at maximising client income and reducing expenditure where possible, to accelerate the rate at which people on a Debt Management Plan'>Debt Management Plan [DMP] become debt free or able to manage their own finances again.
We have a number of clients claiming benefits or who will be over 70 during the course of their DMP, so these type of grants are important to consider."
