Briton tops worst country poll

03/10/2011

Britain has been named the ‘worst country in Europe’ for quality of life, according to Opinium Research, which has based its study on a range of criteria – including finances and lifestyle.

The study, which surveyed ten European countries, saw France top the list, followed by Spain and then Italy.

It suggests that perhaps debt management measures may be required to help Britain cope – as the cost of living was named as one of the chief contributors to the UK’s last placed position.

The cost of diesel and food are the highest of all the countries studied, whilst petrol, alcohol and tobacco are also all higher than the average.

Furthermore, the later retirement age, normally gloomy weather (though last week has been the exception) and fewer days holiday have all combined to affect Britain’s rating.

As a result of these factors, 12 per cent of Britons have reportedly revealed they are thinking of emigrating – choosing France and Spain as their preferred destinations. Furthermore, these factors highlight the debt issue faced by many Britons, as the rising cost of living is just not being met by increased wages.
