'Thousands' seek debt help

24/02/2010

A growing number of people are seeking debt advice and debt help as unemployment takes its toll on Britain.

The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) has reported an increase in calls from people with queries regarding debt, benefits, unemployment and housing problems.

Calls from people looking for information about job seekers allowance rose by a third (33 per cent), suggesting that many people were unsure what to do after finding themselves out of work following the recession.

In England and Wales alone, the charity took nearly ten thousand calls about new debt problems. Debt management plans could be needed to provide these people with a structured way of solving their debt worries.

David Harker, the chief executive at the CAB, commented: "These figures give a stark insight into the human cost of the recession, coming as they do on top of what were already record-breaking enquiry figures for the previous three months."

He added that a rise in the calls from people struggling with their household budgets and high winter fuel bills, suggest that the damage done by the economic downturn is "far from over".
