UK jobs market still 'bleak'
15/02/2010
A new report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has revealed that more jobs cuts are expected in the UK.
The study revealed that employment in Britain was "still on the ropes" with a new wave of jobs cuts likely.
Public sector workers could be the worst affected with suggestions that this sector was particularly "bleak".
John Philpott, chief economic adviser at the CIPD, commented: "Despite the jobs market proving resilient in recent months, this represents a mere pause for breath with the number of redundancies easing in the private sector and spending cuts yet to be felt by large swathes of the public sector."
The survey found that job cuts were likely to rise when compared to the previous quarter, with firms planning to cut 6.2 per cent of their workforce in the first three months of 2010 compared with 3.8 per cent at the end of 2009.
