Rise in credit card fraud to lead to debt help?

21/01/2010

The credit card lifestyle has become more appealing to criminals during the recession than it may have otherwise been.

New figures from assistance company CPP have revealed that more than one quarter of Britain's adults have been victims of credit card fraud, a trend that could increase demand for debt advice.

There have been approximately three million new victims in the past two years alone, with the recession being touted as the main reason for the increase.

CPP card fraud expert Sarah Blaney explained that many fraudsters are turning their attentions to the internet because of the advent of chip and pin technology.

"A lot of sites that are shown to be fraudulent have got basic spelling errors and things like that, which you wouldn't expect from a normal retailer's site," she said.

"If you think there is anything suspicious then just leave the site immediately."

The CPP research also revealed that £2,420 was the average amount of money being transacted fraudulently.
