Debt help could allow couples to start a family earlier
19/01/2010
By finding the right debt solutions, couples could have children when they choose to, rather than putting off starting a family due to debt problems.
A recent report has revealed that 18 per cent of 18-44 year olds are delaying having children because they can't afford adequate housing for their family.
The study, published by Shelter, found that one in five had been waiting to start a family for six years, and a further 37 per cent expected this wait to continue as housing remained unaffordable.
Kay Boycott, director of policy and campaigns at Shelter, commented: "Whilst it is responsible to ensure that you can afford to support a new baby, it is completely unacceptable that housing costs are changing important life decisions like starting a family in such a significant way."
Fertility experts also have expressed concern as success rates for conception, fall dramatically for couples over the age of 35.
The average age of a first time buyer, without any financial assistance from friends and family, is now 37.
