Debt solutions news: Graduate employment shows "green shoots"
14/01/2010
Graduates struggling with student debt could benefit from what recent figures show to be an improving job market.
Employers are expected to hire 11.8 per cent more graduates in 2010 than they did in the previous year, the latest report from High Fliers Research has found.
Commenting on the figures, Mike Hill, chief executive of Graduate Prospects, said that the graduate job market was showing "definite signs of what we might call green shoots".
He added that it was not unusual for graduate employment to be the first to recover after a recession.
"We certainly saw in the early 90s that as the number of people who are unemployed rose, at the same time, the number of graduate vacancies increased, and the number of graduate jobs increased."
High Fliers found that between 2008 and 2009, the UK's top employers offered over 40,000 graduate jobs, although around 10,000 of these were eventually cancelled or postponed.
