Debt management problems force 'couples' to cohabit
11/01/2010
Separated couples who have been forced to live together due to debt problems have been advised to try and live more "harmoniously".
The charity relate, which promotes "health, respect and justice" in couple and family relations, has seen a 66 per cent increase in demand for their help since the recession took hold.
In particular there has been an increase of requests for advice from couples whose money worries have forced them to remain under the same roof after their relationship has ended.
Paula Hall, a relationship psychotherapist for the charity said that couples in this situation need to "sit down and try and collaborate and negotiate on how they can make continuing to live together more harmonious".
She added that those with children should try to minimise conflict as research shows "that it is conflict which damages kids more than the actual separation".
A survey by housing charity Shelter found that 9.9 million adults said they or someone they know has been forced to remain living with their separated partner because they cannot afford to live on their own.
