Reducing number of holidays can form part of debt solutions

04/01/2010

Increasing numbers of people with personal income worries are cutting back on the number of holidays they take.

This is according to a new Gfk poll on behalf of the Charities Aid Foundation, which also revealed that many people are going out less and instead concentrating on the needs of their family.

More than half (52 per cent) of respondents said that the possession of money is more important now than it was before the recession, while 29 per cent said that having material things has become less important.

John Low, Charities Aid Foundation's chief executive, said that the findings suggest that society is becoming "more caring and compassionate" as the likelihood of needing debt advice increases.

"If experience from previous severe economic downturns is anything to go by, this shift in values may last throughout the life time of the generation affected - surely this will be to the long-term health of our society," he commented.

Which? recently advised that having a house-swapping holiday can be a cost-effective way of travelling overseas.
