Npower scrappage scheme 'saves £400 on boilers'
14/12/2009
A new boiler service from Npower which could be used as a supplement to the government's own scrappage scheme has been launched.
The energy supplier said that it will offer customers a £400 financial incentive for trading in a boiler which is over ten years old for a new model.
This follows the chancellor of the exchequer's announcement in last week's Pre-Budget Report speech that customers would be able to claim back £400 from the cost of a new boiler via a state-backed scheme.
In theory, customers could use the two offers in tandem to cut costs by £800 - although final conditions of the government scheme have yet to be revealed.
However, Npower's scheme obliges applicants to have one of the supplier's own boilers installed in their homes.
Kevin Miles, chief executive of Npower retail, said: "It's vital we play our part in supporting this government initiative for two very good reasons. First, the energy savings that a new boiler brings - nearly £235 off your annual gas bill - compared with a G Rated boiler.
"Secondly, very old boilers, unless properly maintained, could pose a health and safety risk."
The typical British household pays just over £1,200 per year for their gas and electricity.
