'Financial skills' of jobless to be improved
07/12/2009
Education on financial affairs for the east of England regions is to be tackled by a government-backed initiative from Citzens Advice.
The project, which has secured £400,000 of new funding from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), allows advisers to conduct sessions designed at improving the "financial skills" of attendees.
Over 800 people will receive help through the sessions, which are to take place next year.
Unemployed attendees are to be given additional assistance on searching for a new job and getting other government unemployment benefits and support.
Sheila Childerhouse, EEDA board member and deputy chair, said: "Skills and attitudes towards money management are important in every aspect of people's lives, especially in these tough economic times.
"This project will develop the financial capability skills of vulnerable people in the region and help them participate more fully and actively in the regional economy."
Recent figures from Citizens Advice suggest that the number of debt- and benefits-related problems faced by members of the public is rising at an annual rate of 21%.
