Energy Bill to tackle fuel poverty
20/11/2009
The Energy Bill announced this week by the government has been welcomed by Consumer Focus.
According to the consumer group, the possible strengthening of energy regulator Ofgem's remit over consumer protection would be a positive consequence of the legislation.
If passed by parliament, the bill would also require mandatory assistance for Britain's most vulnerable gas and electricity customers.
This could involve Ofgem stepping in to help provide rebates for consumers - reducing rates of fuel poverty.
Households are classified as fuel poor when they spend over ten per cent of income on gas and electricity bills.
Consumer Focus also said that the upcoming reforms could have been more radical.
The organisation is calling for discounted tariffs to be provided to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and disabled.
Jonathan Stearn, energy expert for Consumer Focus, added: "We're very glad to see that the government is showing leadership on tackling fuel poverty, by moving to cut the bills of the poorest energy customers.
"However, these plans must ensure that the millions of vulnerable pensioners, families and disabled people living in fuel poverty get the cheapest deal possible."
According to Consumer Focus, 6.6 million UK households will suffer from fuel poverty this winter.
