Belper experiences demand for debt help

12/11/2009

A Derbyshire town has experienced a rise in the number of its residents hoping to solve debt problems.

The number of people in Belper seeking debt help and advice on money problems has almost doubled since 2006, Belper News reports.

According to the town's Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB), this is mainly down to the recession, which has contributed to increased redundancies, falling house prices and credit card-related problems.

The CAB's Emma Hagger told the newspaper that Belper appears to be "following the same trend as everywhere else".

"We have seen a lot more people seeking help, mainly because of a change in circumstances, reduced hours, loss of job or starting a family," she explained.

"With the economic climate as it stands at the moment it doesn’t take much for small debts to become unmanageable."

Ms Hagger went on to say that many clients seeking debt help have complex financial issues as a result of the economic climate.

Teresa Perchard, the CAB's director of public policy, earlier this month urged senior members of financial firms and MPs to visit a local bureau, which would allow them to "see the effects of the recession".
