Debt solutions sought in Scotland

12/11/2009

People hoping to solve debt problems in Scotland have been forced to go without food or fuel in order to pay what they owe.

This is according to Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS), which has published seven reports exposing the "miserable realities" for individuals and families struggling to cope with debt.

According to the BBC, the hardest hit are lone parents, young people, the sick and disabled and the elderly.

CAS revealed that its clients aged 60 and over had an average debt total of GBP26,010, which is an increase of almost 50 per cent over the last two years.

Lone parents were shown to have an average debt of GBP19 for every GBP1 they earned.

Having published the reports, the CAS called on MSPs to take decisive action as a means to alleviate personal income worries.

Last month, CAS welcomed government proposals aimed at tackling irresponsible credit card lending after it claimed that large numbers of Scottish people were "drowning in debt".
