Millions missing out on energy savings
11/11/2009
Millions of households are paying over-the-odds for their energy as they fail to claim the insulation grants to which they are entitled.
Research carried out by the New Policy Institute (NPI) found that as many as 3.6 million UK consumers are missing out on potentially valuable savings to their gas and electricity bills as a direct result of not claiming insulation grants.
According to Home Heat Helpline, which helped compile the think tank's Missing Millions report, the typical family could save around £250 a year simply by getting their home properly insulated, with loft insulation alone cutting annual bills by around £150.
A Home Heat Helpline spokeswoman explained that anyone over the age of 70, as well as low-income households and claimants out of work are entitled to insulation grants.
"We have trained advisers who can help you get grants for insulation, special reduced tariffs as well as advice and support on how to keep warm and save money on your bills," she said.
Commenting, EuroDebt director Kevin Still said: "As Debt Management Company, EuroDebt is committed to looking at maximising client income and reducing expenditure where possible to accelerate the rate at which people on a Debt Management Plan (DMP) become debt free or able to manage their own finances again. We have a number of clients claiming either out-of-work or disability benefits, working tax credit or pension credit, who could also benefit from insulation grants. We also have a number of clients who will be aged over 70 during the lifetime of their DMP who can also apply for a free home insulation grant."
