Brits planning central heating delays
06/11/2009
Penny-pinching Brits are attempting to improve their family finances by not turning the central heating on this winter - and wearing extra clothes instead.
Analysis from Moneysupermarket.com shows that over 750,000 people are planning to put on an extra jumper during the cold weather rather than increasing their energy bills.
Around five million are also thought to be planning to delay turning their heating on for as long as possible during the winter.
Of this group, 62 per cent are imposing the delay to save money, while 18 per cent are doing so because they would not be able to pay their bills otherwise.
Scott Byrom, utilities manager at Moneysupermarket.com, said: "Taking action to combat the cost of fuel bills will be a savvy move for many bill payers this year but its concerning more than 750,000 households will not be turning on their heating this winter, choosing instead to put a jumper on as compensation, especially where the elderly and children are concerned."
"I advise customers looking to make savings on their energy bills, to swap to a monthly direct debit scheme and manage their account online."
Recent analysis from Ofgem, the industry watchdog, suggested that UK gas and electricity bills could rise by up to 25 per cent above inflation over the next 11 years.
