Barnes bankruptcy order is overturned

28/10/2009

The bankruptcy order issued to ex-footballer John Barnes by a court last week has been removed.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) had been pursuing the star over a tax issue, resulting in the legal action.

However, Barnes' solicitor George Castro said that the original order has now been overturned.

The HMRC bills must be paid by November 9th, if the bankruptcy is to be rescinded and the personal income worries are to be removed.

Mr Castro said: "John Barnes was not and is not insolvent."

He added: "My client would like to thank the official receiver and the case workers at HMRC for helping to resolve this unfortunate situation as quickly as possible."

A former Liverpool and England striker, Barnes has worked as a media pundit and as a manager since his retirement.

He told the Press Association last week that a "tax oversight" was responsible for the bankruptcy order and assured his fans that the matter was being "dealt with".ADNFCR-1819-ID-19431056-ADNFCR
