John Barnes declared bankrupt over tax issue
23/10/2009
Former football star John Barnes has faced severe money problems.
The ex-Liverpool player was declared bankrupt at the city's Insolvency Court last week, following a petition from tax authority HM Revenue & Customs.
Since retiring as a footballer, Barnes has taken broadcasting jobs as well as becoming a football manager.
He was sacked from Tranmere FC earlier in October.
Speaking to the Press Association, Barnes said that the bankruptcy was due to a "tax oversight" that was currently being "dealt with".
The footballer also gave details of his personal finance habits in an interview with the Daily Telegraph in March 2009.
"I don't like dealing with bills and never have done
I don't even like opening them," he told the newspaper.
"A few times my credit card has been declined when I've been travelling abroad. Then I have to get creative about paying the bill and have to really route around. That's much more satisfying than just having it come easily."
According to court documents, Barnes will be discharged from bankruptcy on October 14th 2010.
