Workers vote for postal strike
09/10/2009
Three in four postal workers have voted to go on strike in protest at the modernisation of the Royal Mail.
Results of a Communication Workers Union (CWU) ballot announced yesterday showed that 76 per cent had voted for the move.
Currently, localised strikes around the country are leading to delays in deliveries.
This can impact on the credit card sector, as many people forget to pay their monthly repayment if they do not receive their paper statement in time.
Reports suggested last month that up to £150 million in late payment fees could be charged by card providers as a result of the delays.
Commenting on the results of the ballot, CWU's Dave Ward, said: "This is a huge vote of no confidence in Royal Mail management."
Mark Higson, Royal Mail's managing director, said: "We have held more than 70 meetings with the CWU over the last few months and we call on them now to stop the strikes, get back round the table and talk."
