Brits seeking help over water bills
30/09/2009
There has been a 20 per cent increase in the number of people in England and Wales seeking assistance in paying their water bills.
New figures from Ofwat show that a 28,879 customers applied for help under the WaterSure scheme in 2008-09, up from 24,121 the previous year.
In addition, the regulator revealed that companies believe there are several reasons for this rise: the current economic climate, the introduction of better metering systems and a widening knowledge of the tariff programme.
"Some companies track the source of applications to monitor the relative effectiveness of the various initiatives used to promote the tariff," Ofwat said in a statement.
"We continue to encourage companies to do all they can to make sure that customers who could benefit financially from WaterSure are aware of the tariff."
