New energy tariff undercuts best-buy in some regions
21/08/2009
British Gas has launched a new best-buy tariff, the Websaver 4, as competition in the gas and electricity market hots up.
The new online product is available nationwide and will cost dual fuel customers around £994 a year.
EDF Energy's Online v5 tariff is around £10 cheaper a year, making it the best-buy deal on the market.
However, Moneysupermarket.com pointed out that the deal was unavailable in UK regions including London and the south west.
Moreover, EDF's tariff is only available to new customers - while British Gas' offer is open to both new and existing customers.
Scott Byrom, utilities manager at moneysupermarket.com, commented: "British Gas has made a tactical move against EDF Energy, lining themselves up to take advantage of Online v5's shortcomings. My advice to those looking to change tariffs and reduce their energy bills would be to shop around for the best deal in your area."
Kevin Still, EuroDebt director, said: "For people struggling with their personal finances and household budgets, EuroDebt believes it is imperative that consumers look at the best tariffs around to increase household disposable income. EuroDebt has launched its own free comparison site at www.energyswitching.co.uk to enable all UK residents to compare the market with all energy providers listed for both dual and single supply for gas and electricity.
"IT is always worth checking whether current budget plans reflect your actual usage so that there are no shocks when terminating an arrangement with an existing supplier."
The release of the new online-only British Gas also highlights the fact that internet customers consistently pay less for their gas and electricity deals.
At the moment, the cheapest standard tariff comes to £1,189 a year.
