Energy switchers get advice on door-to-door salesman
13/08/2009
Recession-hit Britons have been urged to turn away salesmen who come to their door and try to make them switch their energy provider.
According to Confused.com, around four in ten consumers switch due to the door-to-door sellers - even though they might miss out on cheaper deals as a result.
The site said that customers should instead use price comparison services online, in order gain a better picture of the market.
Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com added: "Door-to-door salesmen could save you money, especially if you have never switched provider or tariff before, but be careful - only by using an accredited price comparison site are you able to search the entire market and find the best deals from a wide range of options.
"Our research shows that you could miss out because door-to-door salesmen don't alert you to online savings, or other providers tariffs, so don't just rely on the salesman's patter - check out their claims for yourself. In as little as five minutes online could save you even more money."
Figures from Confused.com show that the "price gap" between the cheapest tariff offered by a door-to-door salesman and the best-value product offered by a price comparison site can be as much as £130.
"This latest report just highlights how much confusion there is in the energy market" confirmed Kevin Still, Director, EuroDebt.
"But our energy switching tool - www.EuroDebtEnergy.com - can make it easy for families and individuals who are trying to cut their living costs to find the best deal. It provides provides all UK households with the ability to shop around for the best tariff for their utility needs.
If an individual or family is not tied into a lengthy existing contract, we strongly believe they should be actively looking at switching provider to take advantage of the recent reduction in prices. This has become an increasing area of focus for EuroDebt with families being able to achieve annual savings of between £200 and £300 when they switch which not only helps them manage their day to day finances better but significantly accelerates the rate that they become debt free."
