Company chiefs 'must boost apprenticeships'

13/08/2009

Business bosses should help out young people in finding a job, trade union UNISON has said.

According to the group, the government-run public sector will be left "picking up the pieces" of mass job losses - and the private sector could do with additional assistance.

Yesterday, new labour market statistics revealed that unemployment in the UK rose again over the three months to June.

By the end of the period, 2.43 million people, or 7.8 per cent of the workforce, do not have a job.

Commenting, Dave Prentis, UNISON general secretary, said: "Apprenticeships and other on the job training schemes will be crucial to giving young people hope.

"The government has come up with plans to help under 25's find work in the public sector. It is now time for company chiefs to see what they can do to create real jobs and give people hope for the future."

Rising unemployment has come as a direct consequence of the credit crunch and economic downturn, which has resulted in many UK businesses looking to cut costs.

Some business groups expect the jobless total to top three million by 2010.ADNFCR-1819-ID-19311524-ADNFCR
