Debt fears for students
11/08/2009
Students in Scotland are increasingly becoming concerned about the level of debt they are finding themselves in, new research has revealed.
The study by the National Union of Students (NUS) found that more than half of students owe money on overdrafts and credit cards, while two-thirds are in debt to their friends or family.
In addition, the majority of students were in employment alongside their degree, with 85 per cent of part-time working students undertaking jobs to boost their income and pay off their debts.
Liam Burns, president of NUS Scotland, said that a recent Scottish government consultation into student loans and grants much focus on how college and university attendees can be best supprted.
"Our survey has clearly shown that the government is absolutely right to be concerned about student debt, but the subtlety of what kind of debt will determine whether this government delivers for students or not," he added.
