Retirement fears for older unemployed
11/08/2009
Older people who have lost their jobs during the recession face the possibility of never working again, unions have warned.
The likelihood of returning to work is diminishing for people who have been out of employment for a long period - a situation that is unlikely to improve unless action is taken, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) said.
New research by the organisation has found that people above the age of 50 years are ten times more likely to be unemployed than in work after two years of not having a job.
Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, admitted that the recession had hit younger workers the worst but added that over-50s should also be supported.
"The government must introduce tailored support for older people to prevent them being forced into retirement against their will and face old age in poverty," he added.
Total UK unemployment was 2.38 million in the three months to May.
