Travellers 'risking high mobile costs'
11/08/2009
Britons travelling overseas this summer could face high mobile charges just by switching their handsets on, a price comparison website has warned.
Four in ten UK holidaymakers has been shocked by a high phone bill on their return home, research by uSwitch.com found.
The website also discovered that a lack of awareness about mobile charges abroad is mainly responsible for the high costs and associated bills, with 85 per cent of Brits not sure how they will be charged for using their mobiles overseas.
This is despite the fact that one-third of UK residents keep their handsets switched on while holidaying and over a quarter occasionally turn their mobiles on to check messages when abroad.
Steve Weller, a communications expert at uSwitch.com, advised: "When it comes to taking a mobile phone abroad on holiday, consumers have to 'know before they go' if they don't want to be hit with unexpected charges."
