Switching providers 'can help reduce utility bills'
04/08/2009
Britons should change their utility providers this summer in order to reduce their energy bills this winter, a consumer group has advised.
Which? said that recent price cuts in gas and electricity bills should be taken advantage of quickly.
The organisation noted that although the reductions are not as big as last summer's price increases, consumers can still enjoying significant cost savings if they change their providers.
Alison Morrison of Which? Switch said: "Now that all of the major energy companies have cut their prices, this could be a great opportunity to switch suppliers or tariffs.
"It seems strange to think about your heating bills in summer, but this is a decision that could benefit customers all year round."
Kevin Still, director of EuroDebt, added: "With household budgets being squeezed it is important for any bill payer to look at reducing expenditure where it is simple and straightforward to achieve.
"EuroDebt introduced its free comparison site at www.energyswitching.co.uk to enable consumers to compare tariffs online and switch free of charge. Even staying with the same provider on a different tariff can save money.
"If you are prepared to pay by direct debit and use an online tariff then there are some very good deals available. EuroDebt has also set up a bank switching facility at www.bankswitching.co.uk to enable any UK resident to have a prepaid current account so that they can use direct debit without bank charges if the direct debit fails.
"There are no credit checks and everyone is eligible even if they are on a Debt Management Plan, an IVA or subject to bankruptcy.
