Cheaper utilities 'good news for bill payers'
24/07/2009
Plans to cut water bills will benefit consumers, a top support group has said.
Consumer Focus issued the comments today, in reaction to news from Ofwat that water and sewerage firms must reduce customer charges by four per cent from 2010 to 2015.
The water watchdog added that it wants companies to bill the typical household around £330 per year by the end of this period.
Philip Cullum, deputy chief executive at Consumer Focus, said: "Lower prices will be good news for vulnerable customers struggling to pay the bills and who may be limiting the amount of water they use.
"It's important that we're all more conscious of our water consumption, but this should not be at the expense of basic living standards such as bathing and washing clothes."
Recent data from confused.com suggest that the typical UK family will pay out around £1 million in household bills over the course of their lifetimes.
This equates to around £18,000 per year on essential costs such as rent and utilities bills.
