Energy group concerned over government's green plans
14/07/2009
An energy group has called on the government to step in and cut energy prices for vulnerable households.
National Energy Action (NEA) said that emissions-cutting policies should not over-burden people through rising gas and electricity bills.
The comments follow the release of a report from Greenpeace, which estimated that current plans from ministers to reduce the national carbon footprint would end up costing around £100 billion.
In turn, the environmental group said that some of this massive cost would be passed on to the UK customer.
This is despite over four million households already suffering from "fuel poverty" - where over ten per cent of income is spent on gas and electricity costs.
Maria Wardrobe, director of communications at NEA, said: "This [government] investment is needed and it is evident that the costs will be passed through to consumers.
"We are calling on government to protect the most vulnerable and help mitigate the effects of high energy prices by introducing a mandatory social tariff."
The government is to update on its renewable energy strategy later this week.
