"Never too early" to find student digs
10/07/2009
Students moving into new accommodation should start looking for properties at the earliest opportunity in order to get the best deals, a price comparison website has advised.
Confused.com issued the tip as part of a checklist for students planning to find their own place in the upcoming academic year.
The firm also advised students to ask landlords for gas safety certificates, while at the same time they should ensure that it is clear who is responsible for paying bills.
Students should also let utility companies know when they move into the property and when they leave; that way, they will only pay for the gas and electricity they have used.
"Moving into a new house at any stage of your life is an exciting time, but finding a few minutes to follow this simple checklist could not only save you money, it'll also mean that the only headache you get in your new home is down to Fresher's Week overindulgence," said Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com.
"Something as easy as reading your meters can make sure that you only pay for what you are responsible for."
