Mass sackings at oil plant announced
19/06/2009
Around 900 people have lost their jobs at a Total oil plant after a dispute with bosses.
A contractor at the refinery had planned to make 51 workers redundant as part of a restructuring plan, despite the fact that another firm on site was making hires at the same time.
This sparked strike action from the oil workers - in response, mass sackings have now taken place.
A spokesman for trade union Unite said: "We are extremely concerned about the ramifications of the employer's actions."
The sacked workers, who were all working on the same £200 million project at the plant, now have until Monday to reapply for their jobs.
Total's actions come against a background of rising job insecurity caused by the downturn in the economy.
Official unemployment figures released earlier this week showed that job losses were on the up in the UK as the recession drags on.
In all, 7.2 per cent of the workforce is unemployed - the highest for 12 years.
