Regional splits seen in job loss figures

17/06/2009

Big splits have emerged in how people are being affected by the recession - depending on where they live.

The Local Government Association (LGA) found that people across the country are experiencing job losses, but that those in "elementary" occupations are losing work at a faster rate in the West Midlands, south Yorkshire, Liverpool and Manchester.

Meanwhile, those in "white-collar" professions are suffering the sharpest cuts if they live in London and the south-east.

Overall, the LGA said that 77 per cent more people in skilled trades and "elementary" jobs have begun to claim jobseeker's allowance over the past year.

For managers and professionals, this rise has hit 154 per cent - with big cutbacks in the London-centred financial services sector helping to drive up numbers.

Sir Jeremy Beecham, vice-chairman of the LGA, said: "The analysis clearly shows that different parts of the country are being affected by the recession in very different ways - even within individual regions there are marked differences as to how local areas are faring.

"A national, one size fits all approach to dealing with the recession simply isn’t going to work."ADNFCR-1819-ID-19223240-ADNFCR
