Cut bills through smart meters, site suggests

16/06/2009

High praise for energy "smart meters" was offered by a financial website today.

uSwitch.com said that users of the new devices, which could soon be introduced to homes nationwide in a government-backed programme, could save money on their bills over the long term.

Smart meters work by telling householders how much energy appliances are using in their home at any one time.

Therefore, people are encouraged to cut down on waste - improving their energy efficiency and reducing their overall usage.

The government has previously indicated that it wants to introduce a smart meter for every UK home before 2020.

Will Marples, energy expert at uSwith.com, said: "Smart meters are obviously still a relatively new technology and are beginning to bed in but they allow you to manage your usage better and have a real-time view of what you are spending.

"As well as managing your consumption more effectively smart meters also allow you to be that bit more energy efficient."

Ministers are currently consulting on their energy meter scheme.ADNFCR-1819-ID-19220943-ADNFCR
