'Dad value' revealed
15/06/2009
The typical dad saves a household £23,000 a year - just by doing work around the house.
Legal & General (L&G) said that this total had doubled in the past four years, with fathers up and down the country pitching in to do household chores.
Men were found to be spending 53 hours a week on domestic tasks - including childcare - up from 34 in 2005.
The report was released against a backdrop of the worst recession in decades - with job insecurity on the up and household budgets becoming ever more pressurised.
This appears to have led more and more men to help around the house to save money.
Meanwhile, a poll conducted by L&G revealed that almost half (46 per cent) would prefer not to work and would like to be a "house-husband" instead.
Alan Ferguson, protection marketing and channel development director at the firm, said: "Mums often get the headlines when it comes to domestic work, but actually dads contribute a huge amount too.
"These days, the jobs involved in running a house are far more evenly distributed."
