People 'need legal help due to job worries'
01/06/2009
In a further sign that job losses are on the increase across the UK, advisors are reporting increased requests for legal help in employment disputes.
Insurance provider Liverpool Victoria said that its helpline, which hooks customers up with guidance on the law, has seen a 21 per cent rise in inquiries.
Around 25 per cent of these callers are looking for help on issues to do with jobs - an increase of around a third over the past year.
During the same period, official government figures have shown unemployment spiking above two million to its highest level in over a decade.
Latest statistics show that the total now stands at 2.22 million - 7.1 per cent of the workforce.
Firms have been looking to reduce staff numbers as they are struggling financially in the recession.
John O'Roarke, managing director of Liverpool Victoria home insurance, commented: "The statistics from our helpline show that an increasing number of people are looking for legal help because of employment problems caused directly by the recession.
"The issues are far ranging, covering redundancies, a reduction in hours and pay, or changes in employment contracts."
Liverpool Victoria also said that it estimates up to one million people have sought out legal advice on employment issues over the last year.
