Bargain holidays a priority for millions
26/05/2009
Brits are getting smart about their finances in the recession - and are looking to have a cut-price holiday this summer.
One in three were found by Tesco Travel Money to be spending less on their break than they did last year.
Just over one in ten said that they would be spending "significantly" less - with many swapping a pricey overseas holiday for a UK trip.
Of those making the cutbacks, 33 per cent are going self-catering, 43 per cent are planning to spend less on gifts and duty-free and 54 per cent are planning to reduce their food and drink costs.
A Tesco Travel Money spokesperson said: "It's great to see that holidaymakers are pulling out the stops to get value for money and making sacrifices to ensure they get their two weeks in the sun.
The researchers also found that around 25 million people - almost one in two of the total population - were planning to go on holiday this year.
Despite the recession, 14 million said that they would take two or more trips.
