Five a day 'costs just 80p'

21/05/2009

You only need 80p a day to get your five portions of fruit and veg.

This is the main claim of new research from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) - designed to show that low-income families can still eat healthily.

In the study, fears were expressed that the onset of the credit crunch could see Brits ditching healthy food because it's "too expensive" and eating cheap processed food instead.

However, researcher Nathalie Winn said that creative cooks can still get bargain fruit and veg if they shop around.

Ms Winn said: "If you shop carefully there is no reason why you cannot have plenty of fruits and vegetables even on a very limited budget."

She added: "The secret is not to restrict yourself to the fresh fruit section of the supermarket because frozen vegetables and canned fruit also count towards your five portions a day and they often cost much less."

The WCRF said that fruit and veg consumption as part of a healthy diet can reduce risks of developing certain types of cancers.ADNFCR-1819-ID-19181541-ADNFCR
