Hard-up Brits turn to "grow your own"

14/05/2009

Brits are looking at new ways of saving money in the recession, with many turning to home grown food to cut costs.

Dobbies Garden Centres have noted a recent rise in sales of its Grow Your Own range, with fruit and vegetable plants proving particularly popular.

Lucy Halsalll, editor of Grow Your Own magazine, said that there are several reasons for this increase, but hinted that cutting the cost of the weekly shopping bill is the main factor.

She said the trend is becoming "hugely popular" across the UK as Brits start to cut back in the supermarket.

"People having financial constraints and not being able to maybe go to the supermarkets and buy what they want as they did in the past has definitely had an effect on people growing their own at home," she explained.

Recent research from B&Q has reinforced the British appetite for growing fruit and veg at home. The hardware firm found that people with a vegetable plot, allotment, or collection of plant pots can cut grocery bills by over £200 a year. ADNFCR-1819-ID-19169326-ADNFCR
