Smart meters 'to cut energy bills'
11/05/2009
Energy bills could get cheaper thanks to the government's introduction of smart meters.
The initiative will mean an end to "inaccurate bills and estimated meter readings", with Brits only paying for the energy they have actually used.
Every home in the UK is to be fitted with smart meters by the end of 2020, the Department of Energy and Climate Change announced today (May 11th).
The meters will offer information on what energy is used when, allowing suppliers to offer cheap off-peak power to customers.
Customers will be able to spot where they can save power by gathering real-time information from the meters.
Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband said: "Smart meters will empower all consumers to monitor their own energy use and make reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions as a result.
"This is a big project affecting 26 million homes, and several million businesses, so it's important we design a system that brings best value to everyone involved."
