Lettings agent crackdown announced

07/05/2009

A new licencing scheme aimed at stamping out rip-off lettings agents has been unveiled by an industry group.

The Association of Residential Lettings Agents (Arla) announced the licencing system yesterday - and said that it would help to limit numbers of "cowboy agents".

When the new scheme is rolled out, the professionals will have competency and qualifications in place for the first time.

All agents would need to pay a licence fee before letting a home.

Ruth Lilley, head of membership and professional development of Arla, said: "For too long the rental sector has been seen as the black sheep of the property market with a lack of regulation of and a requirement for redress to protect the consumer when the agent's failings are to the financial detriment of that consumer.

"The Arla Licensing Scheme will create the gold standard for letting agents in the UK, offering consumers best practice service and advice - as well as a commitment to the protection of their money."

Figures from the industry group suggest that 95 per cent of people believe that agents should be licenced.

Also commenting on the move, Which? legal service lawyer Espe Fuentes said: "We receive many calls from tenants who have issues with their landlords. Most are about poor living conditions and problems with landlords still not putting deposits into the deposit scheme.

"Arla's licensing system is certainly a step in the right direction to offer greater protection for tenants."ADNFCR-1819-ID-19157817-ADNFCR
