Brits 'drink drive to cut costs'

06/05/2009

The shocking extent of Brits' need to cut costs in the credit crunch was exposed yesterday by a new report from an insurer.

Direct Line Car Insurance said that large numbers of people were drink-driving on their way home from nights out or other social occasions - in order to save on taxi fares.

According to the poll, eight per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds had driven under the influence to save money - along with three per cent of 35 to 54-year-olds and one per cent of over-55s.

The survey comes as tough economic times push unemployment rates up, squeezing budgets and leaving households with less money to spend on transport.

Maggie Game, head of Direct Line car insurance, commented: "The willingness of people to risk drinking and driving to save on taxi fares is a frightening prospect.

"It's worrying to see the number of people who would drink and drive because they feel saving a few pounds outweighs the risk to themselves and others. There is no excuse for drink driving, as a few hours of fun and a saved taxi fare could result in a lifetime of misery."

There are over 30 million drivers in the UK.ADNFCR-1819-ID-19155511-ADNFCR
