Table-topping tariff released as energy price war continues
06/05/2009
Hopes for an energy "price war" between gas and electricity firms have been given a boost.
Scottish Power, one of the "big six" UK energy providers, has announced the release of a new capped tariff, Online Energy Saver 5.
Price comparison website Confused.com suggests that the new deal will offer the cheapest energy on the market in six out of 14 UK regions.
This means that the tariff has beaten out the previous table-topper, Fixed Online from rivals E.On.
Gareth Kloet, head of utilities at Confused.com, commented: "The energy price war seems to have turned colder, of late, with weeks rather than days having passed between the latest price reductions, or introduction of new energy tariffs.
"We expect this to be the calm before the storm of renewed energy price warfare in the summer which can, again, only be good news for financially squeezed households."
Figures from uSwitch.com suggest that gas and electricity providers in the UK hiked bills for customers by 42 per cent last year.
