Fashion sales 'still growing, despite recession'
30/04/2009
Single mums and other women are refusing to pass up on clothes shopping despite the financial downturn, Cosmopolitan said today.
According to the women's magazine, many shoppers will carry on spending because "looking good" is "the one thing that makes you feel better" in times of recession.
The comments follow the announcing of financial results from popular fashion website ASOS, which revealed that sales were up by 90 per cent, pushing profits to £7.3 million.
IMRG Capgemini also showed that online sales shot up by 19 per cent in March, compared to the same month last year.
This is despite official government economic figures showing that Britain is suffering its sharpest downturn for decades.
Shelly Vella, fashion director at Cosmopolitan, said: "I think we are still shopping. The one thing that makes you better in times like this is looking good."
She added: "I think women will be a little bit savvier about where they spend their money but they are still going to spend money. I did it today - I broke my resolution of not spending anything and still found myself buying a top first thing this morning."
