'Job loss cities' revealed
15/04/2009
UK cities in which recent job losses have been highest have been revealed by major new research.
The Work Foundation said that Birmingham is suffering from the biggest unemployment crisis, with the number of people seeking jobseeker's allowance shooting from 5.3 to 7.3 per cent over the past year.
Leeds and Glasgow took second and third place - while London appeared comparatively insulated from the downturn and did not appear in the top ten.
Ongoing recession conditions in the economy stemming from the credit crunch have resulted in unemployment rising above two million in Britain for the first time in a decade.
The Work Foundation's poll suggests that job losses from manufacturing are outweighing those lost from services industries.
For example, Birmingham is the location of many carbuilding plants.
Naomi Clayton, senior researcher at the Work Foundation, added: "Places in the eye of the storm as job losses mount are the UK's core cities and areas associated with traditional manufacturing - places that in many cases had yet to recover fully from previous recessions before this one set in."
