Deposit reclaims 'proving successful for tenants'

03/04/2009

Tenants who feel that they have been treated unfairly by their landlord stand a good chance of reclaiming money owed, Mydeposits.co.uk has claimed.

According to the specialist website, 91 per cent of tenants who enter deposit dispute cases get their money back.

Commonly, such cases begin when tenants feel that their landlord has unfairly withheld their deposit.

Mydeposits.co.uk said that the typical deposit involved in these cases is worth £733.

This is significantly below the national average of £1,052, suggesting that low-income households face a disproportionately high number of withheld deposits.

Eddie Hooker, chief executive of mydeposits.co.uk, said: "We can now clearly see the protection laws are working. All cases are decided fairly using evidence presented by both parties."

"It is also important to remember that most deposits are handed back at the end of the tenancy without any problems."

A report released earlier this week by the National Landlords Association showed that around one in three UK tenants were currently in arrears.

The credit crunch and economic downturn was cited by the group as a big factor behind this high total.ADNFCR-1819-ID-19107556-ADNFCR
