Make water metering mandatory, consumer group says
03/04/2009
The introduction of mandatory water meters could have lead to reductions in customer bills through increased efficiency.
According to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), customers stand to "save money" if they install a water meter in their home.
The devices work in a similar way to gas and electricity meters, allowing householders to check their water consumption at any one time.
This should, in turn, discourage excessive waste, cutting usage and therefore utilities bills.
A CCW spokesman commented: "There is evidence to suggest that people with a water meter could, if they use less water, save money
the majority of consumers understand that metering is the safest and the fairest way to pay."
The CCW recommendation follows the release of an Environment Agency report, which called for water meters to be compulsory in all homes.
Water bills are to increase by an average of 4.1 per cent this year for customers, watchdog Ofwat has said.
