Ten jobseekers for each job, shock report shows

16/03/2009

Each job vacancy can be matched to an average of ten jobseekers, new figures from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) have shown.

According to the group, rising unemployment and falling demand for new staff from employers due to the credit crunch have brought about the situation, the Observer reports.

The TUC also said that the jobs market was still worse in one part of the south-east of England, where there are 60 jobseekers for each vacant position.

Official government figures to be released are expected to show a rise in unemployment.

Around 1.97 million people were found to be out of work the last time the jobless total was measured in December 2008.

This total was the highest measured in the UK for unemployment in over a decade.

Speaking to the newspaper, TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "These shocking figures blow out of the water the government's claim that there are plenty of jobs available for people who are prepared to look."ADNFCR-1819-ID-19075817-ADNFCR
